Bratislava Christmas 2007, New Year 2008
New Year 2008 in Bratislava For the New Year 2008 the City of Bratislava will likely again organise a major party.
In the previous year the city prepared a large party in the streets of Bratislava culminating in midnight fireworks over the Danube preceded by a laser-lights countdown. The main venue was the Main Square (Hlavne Namestie) featuring a New Year's concert with local bands such as Ska-Pra Supina, Vidiek, Gladiator, Hex, Para (which, will usher in the New Year) and Polemic.
The Hviezdoslavovo Square offered world music concerts starting at 6 p.m. (Pressburger Klezmer Band, Sendreiovci & Kokavere Lavutara, Mango Molas) followed by an open-air disco from 9 pm.
The fireworks took place starting a quarter of an hour before midnight, accompanied by a music performance by Marian Varga.
Bratislava has held successful New Year's (called Silvester in Slovakia) celebrations in the last few years including a series of public performances, concerts, DJ sets and other attractions. The date coincides with the anniversary of the creation of the Slovak Republic. Download Map of New Year's Zone

Bratislava at Christmas
--Bratislava Christmas Market
The traditional Bratislava Christmas Market takes place in the Main Square in the Old Town, right in front of the Municipal Museum as well as in the adjacent Frantiskanske Square and the Hviezdoslavovo Square, between late November and Christmas. The squares fill up with wooden booths offering Christmas gifts, ornaments and a variety of traditional Christmas foods and drinks. Every afternoon there are performances by various local choirs and singers.
Among the region's traditional Christmas specialties you should not miss the Lokse (potato crepes) available with various fillings (poppy-seed, goose liver), variety of grilled meats, mulled wine, honey-wime, Christmas Punch... People are merry and friendly but watch for the occasional pick-pocket. A few years ago, the city commissioned the construction of new stalls inspired by the architecture of old Bratislava. --Shopping The Christmas Markets offer a variety of traditional Slovak Christmas decorations and gifts.
