BratislavaHotels.com warns visitors of 'tram scam'

Bratislava, September 28, 2006 (BratislavaHotels.com) - Foreign visitors to Bratislava should be very careful when using the city's public transport - according to visitors ticket inspectors frequently fine foreigners for accidental violations.

The most common pretexts include unmarked tickets due to non-functioning machines, travel beyond ticket duration, missing ticket for baggage. Inspectors often intimidate tourists into paying SKK 1400 (EUR 43.68) per person fines.
BratislavaHotels.com has repeatedly reported visitor feedback on this issue to the City of Bratislava and the media but the frequency of complaints by visitors remains high.

Additionally, visitors frequently report difficulties pruchasing tickets, as these are only available from teller machines requiring Slovak coins.
It is important that visitors familiarise themselves with the rules governing the public transport system (see e.g. information at http://www.bratislavahotels.com/bratislava-public-transport). If they encounter problems they should immediately ask Slovak fellow passengers for assistance and to contact the police, they should refuse to hand over passports or leave the vehicle without an interpreter. They may also contact their respective embassy or the official Bratislava Culture and Information Centre.
