Centre Plaza to replace Bratislava landmark Hotel Kyjev, demoliton to begin 2007

Hotel KyjevBratislava, October 30, 2006 (BratislavaHotels.com) - Bratislava city centre's landmark, the communist-era Hotel Kyjev is scheduled for demolition in 2007 to make room for a new set of buildings named the Centre Plaza.

The new development framed by the central streets of Dunajska, Rajska, Spitalska and Kamenne Square will also see the demolition of the Tesco department store on the site of the former Prior store but only after a new building for the store is erected within the Centre Plaza site.

Hotel Kyjev SuiteLordship, a UK and Czech Republic based real-estate developer, will carry out the SKK 5 billion, 30,000 square metre project and operate it jointly with Tesco Stores upon completion. The newly built buildings should house two hotels, as well as office space and luxury apartments. Two new pedestrian promenades will be built, along with four floors of underground parking. Completion is foreseen within two-three years, with tentative opening at Christmas 2009.

The three-star Hotel Kyjev was built along with the Prior department store between 1961 and 1973 to the design of architect Ivan Matusik with many unique architectural features (see slide show with photos at ostmoderne).

Tesco Department StoreIn the communist era the Kyjev was for a period of time one of Bratislava's nicest hotels, serving "capitalist" foreigners and communist wheeler-dealers. After the fall of Communism in 1989 the Hotel remained in service but Prior changed operators first to American K-Mart and later to British Tesco. Throughout, it remained a very popular shopping spot for locals and tourists. According to the investor, the Tesco department store will remain open until the new store is built and will be torn down afterwards.

Hotel Kyjev RestaurantRumours of closure of the Hotel Kyjev have circulated for several years and the hotel has invested very little in upgrading its facilities recently. The management decided to cover one of the sides with a large advertising banner, obscuring the views from rooms. The standards therefore declined from its original 3-star level more to a 2-star rating. With 180 rooms, it was the last remaining large moderately-priced hotel in the Bratislava city centre, with double rooms starting around SKK 2000 (EUR 63.08). At present, Hotel Kyjev does not accept bookings past the end of September 2007.
