Rooms were better than expected. It was not so easy to find hotel entrance - there could have been a sign on the street. The hotel has its own style. Service was very good. Breakfast was very good. Cleanliness was very good ( a bit dusty under the radiator). It was too hot in the room. Overall value - we were satisfied. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Harald from Norway wrote on 13.01.2008:
The description was more positive then the look of the hotel. Not so different, but I experienced the hotel to be older then description. The location is good, with walking distances to what you need. Cleanliness was satisfactory, quality ok, not the best. But this is because of age I think. Overall value is very good, and good breakfast. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Masa from Croatia wrote on 01.11.2007:
Everything was as we expected. I have to say that hotel Kiev has the best employees, all the people on the reception were extremely nice.
Before Bratislava we were in Prag, and they have nicer hotels but staff was terrible. But in hotel Kiev staff made us believe that we are the most important guests and I have to say it was very nice experience.
On the other hand hotel needs big repairs, as soon as possible. It has great location, but interior has died long time ago. Everything is very clean but some things you cant clean anymore. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Russell from UK wrote on 31.10.2007:
The room was very clean and serviced daily. Excellent value for a central location. The room and en suite could have been a little more modern, the mattress a little softer, but I think this actually added to the charm of what one taxi driver told me is Bratislava's last communist-era city centre hotel. The breakfast was very good. Especially interesting were the occasional pork gulash, pork kebab breakfast options: at first I thought they were serving up leftovers from the previous night's dinner service, but apparently this is traditional, local breakfast fare. The hotel was as described, but on the pictures on the website it doesn't seem so old. But it was clean and the service was good and the staff very friendly. The thing we enjoyed the most was the breakfast. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

I was very happy with my stay at Hotel Kyjev. The rooms are satisfactory and clean, if slightly shabby, but the first-rate hotel staff more than make up for any room deficiencies. I will stay at Hotel Kyjev again. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Ken from Canada wrote on 25.05.2007:
I enjoyed my stay there, despite it being somewhat run down. The breakfast was awesome (as everyone has commented on) and the staff were very friendly. I would only recommend this hotel to single travelers or to couples who are traveling on a budget. I would not recommend it to families or business travelers unless they were also on a budget. Steven from UK wrote on 06.05.2007:
The hotel itself is shabby and in need of serious upgrading though we are told it is about to be torn down. Our room was clean but bathroom facilities were cracked, carpets were ancient and dirty and the door seemed less than secure. Halls were noisy probably due to the presence of several British stag parties which for some travelers can be off-putting. The breakfast was fine and hearty. The staff was pleasant. The location in central Bratislava in easy walking distance to the old town is very good. We would definitely not recommend this hotel to fussy travelers. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Alexis from France wrote on 28.11.2006:
The hotel conformed to the description of other users (comfortable, a bit old building but its "communist" design was quite charming). About the room: a bit old but ok, the only negative point is that we couldn't get a double bed but 2 twin beds. And last point, a very good breakfast. I would advice this hotel to anybody looking for a well located and relatively cheap place, and who appreciate this retro design. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

David from UK wrote on 20.11.2006:
Well having travelled in Russia we knew what to expect and were not disappointed. In truth the hotel needs completely modernising, but taking it as it was, the room was very clean, the staff were very helpful and the breakfast was excellent. Its central location is its main strength. We were disappointed that even in a lower standard room (without TV) we did expect two chairs. Perhaps next time we will have a higher standard room (With TV) and we could always sit on the TV! But to be serious the Kyjev was fine at the price, we would & will stay there again. We would recommend the Kyjev and your service to others. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Bernhard from Austria wrote on 09.11.2006:
The Kyiev was better than expected, although it is rather old and needs some renovation, the service is great and the breakfast was one of the best we ever had in a hotel. Hotel Kyjev is the right place for visitors, who want a valuable Hotel close to the Old Town with the special charm of the 70ies, maybe its not the right choice for older guests or business people. Hiroshi from Japan wrote on 09.10.2006:
I had no major problems, but minor problems, such as laundry. They did not provide quick service. But mostly okay, staff are so kind and great, especially women at the reception. I would recommend this hotel to others. Good access to anywhere. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Melanie from Austria wrote on 08.10.2006:
Hotel Kyjev was as described. I found it amusing and altohugh it has the bare-minimum with regard to furnishings, I enjoyed my stay. The staff was extrememly kind and inquisitive. And as stated the breakfast was delicious. I would recommend it to others who do not need lavish furnishings or quite frankly modern ones but who are comfortable with the motto "a little goes a long way" and I will stay there again. Han from Netherlands wrote on 01.10.2006:
Honestly, I think that a lot should be done to make Kyjev an up-to-date hotel. I was intrigued by the 1970s "East Bloc" atmosphere, but I doubt if many others will be. Elevators seem positively outdated if not dangerous. Rooms are hard to claen because of the old and well-worn materials; plumbing should definitely be replaced. The bar is extremely uninviting (and closes too early anyway for a nightcap). Immediate renovation is necessary! Only breakfast is excellent. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Janne from Sweden wrote on 21.09.2006:
The hotel was as described and I must say it was also much better than my expectations. The staff was very nice, the lifts were definitively not so slow, the room was clean, the bed was comfortable and the breakfast was delicious. Of course the hotel was a little bit old-fashioned and very much 1970's style, but I actually preferred this old-time/style flair as a very welcome contrast to the extremely boring "Western-European-Hotel-AccorGroup-Style" of many other hotels (including many other socialist-era Interhotels etc that have been modernised, like the Hotel Carpatia in Humenné). If you can't live without this Pastel-coloured Airconditioned Plastic Modern Hotel Feeling then don't use Hotel Kyjev. If you can live with staying in an old-fashioned hotel that offers clean rooms at very good rates, then you should definitively try Hotel Kyjev. I am happy that I did that, and I will use the hotel again without hesitation. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Enric from Spain wrote on 17.08.2006:
The hotel was ugly, ramshackle, old. Our room was gloomy. There was a big spider in the room. The windows were broken.
The hotel wasn't as decribed. I don't recommend this hotel. The employees were a rude boys. It's liked as we were in the time of cold war. And the price not correspond with services delivery. Thank goodness we only stayed 1 night! (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Alan from UK wrote on 14.07.2006:
The hotel was exactly as expected. The description was accurate and the rooms acceptable. The staff were very friendly and most helpful and we would certainly recommend the hotel to anyone wanting a low cost central location. The hotel offered excellent value for money and anyone wanting higher standards should be prepared to pay a lot more and stay elsewhere. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Anthony from UK wrote on 11.07.2006:
The hotel is a real dump (although I didn't expect anything different!). It's a good central location and cheap. Would recommend for a cheap weekend away but not if you want to stay at a semi-decent hotel. It says it's a three-star hotel but it should be one star! (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Andrew from UK wrote on 01.07.2006:
The rooms were not that similar to the pictures on the website and were not very clean. The smell was not good! But for our purposes, it was fine because it is a low cost hotel and we did not spend much time in it. I would only recommend it to other 'stag parties'. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Darla from USA wrote on 08.06.2006:

Martine from Netherlands wrote on 15.05.2006:
The hotel was fine by me, because I knew I shouldn't expect it to be luxurous. It's an old hotel, it has only two very slow elevators although it has over 15 floors and 100 rooms! That is far too little. We also found the rooms not well detained and very noisy. There were some stag parties going on and they didn't exactly help us in having a good nightrest. But then again, one of the reasons I booked this hotel was because of it's history and the role it played during the cold war. It was a nice time travel. Breakfast was excellent. Susan from England wrote on 13.05.2006:
The hotel was very run down and our room had insects all over the floor, some of us were bitten, this may have been by fleas. The toilet leaked all over the bathroom floor which isn't hygienic and the shower hose had holes in it which meant that it also leaked everywhere and caused the bathroom to flood. The bath tub was extremely stained, we even took a photo and the towels were thin and at most hand towels. One of the party had "brown" stains on her bedsheets..... Our party got stuck in the lift a few times. We ordered a hairdryer from reception and it blew up. The wallpaper in many parts of the corridors was badly stained and peeling off from damp etc. plus the lights didnt work/on all the time so were walking to our rooms in the dark. I realise that the hotel was very cheap but the standard should have been better even if the furniture and fittings remain basic. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Natsuko from UK wrote on 06.05.2006:
The hotel was as described on the web. Much better, in fact! Hotel staff are all welcoming and speak good English. The room (Twin w/out TV) is quite spacious and clean. Loved sofa and a table in the room. It was a bonus that there was a bath tab!
Wooden interiors are so beautiful. Breakfast is also great. Large selection of drinks, sweets and other foods are very generous. Staff in the breakfast room were working very efficiently on the busy Sunday morning.
Yes, I would recommend Hotel Kyjev to others, indeed. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

The hotel was fine apart from it could do with a good plumber to repair
the leaking toilets, baths and sinks - we had 6 rooms and all either had broken sinks which had been glued together, leaking toilets, leaking bidets or damaged baths. It was ok for our visit this time but I would recommend other travellers to pay a little extra for a better hotel depending on the nature of their visit. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

The hotel was exactly as described and as expected. I highly recommend it to other budget travelers who are not planning to spend the whole day in their room, and all they need is a bed, shower and toilet in the room. The rooms are as described, they get cleaned every day. The hotel staff were very helpful, and pleasent. I have stayed in budget and expensive hotels in quiet a few of the former eastern block countries, including Russia and its former republics, and the only place I found the staff at the hotels as helpful and pleasent was in the 175$/night hotels, never in budget hotels before. The only thing I didn't like is when I asked for a taxi they did not call a taxi company, hence prices were higher. The location of the hotel was very good, some 5 minutes walk from the old town, cafes, restaurants, etc. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Alan from UK wrote on 15.02.2006:
The hotel Kyjev is rather shabby and a bit run down, but from the feedback we did expect this to a degree. The hotel could do with a lick of paint and a good cleaning. But it is in a very good position in the centre of Bratislava; but I probably wouldn't recommend it to others as there is better, cleaner and more modern accommodation available for the same rate in the city centre. It is a good choice in terms of its central location and cost. The breakfast was also very good and well presented. The downside is that the hotel needs renovation. Hotel Kyjev is really next to the Supermarket and next to the historical city centre; Service and Breakfeast are really very good - but the rooms are not new furnished or renovated, but it is a really good choice for those who don't need "perfect" or new rooms, but a cheap hotel next to the city center with good breakfast. If you can get past the 1970s styling and temperamental lifts then the Hotel Kyev represents excellent value for money. The rooms were clean (if basic) and as mentioned elsewhere on this website, the

Essentially you get what you pay for, and the hotel offers a break from the usual monochrome styling of the chain hotel - there is a real feel of faded elegance. With this, its location means that the city centre is a short walk. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Due to the "lower standard" room I ordered I did not expect too much. But for that price I expected better quality of the room. I slept well, the sheets were clean, which I cannot say about the carpet and courtains. The whole room smeels after cigarettes, which was really bad, because I am a non-smoker and I did not receive an information neither from the website, nor from the desk at the hotel.
I loved the breakfast, which will be a reason to come back. Usually if I come for more days, I stay at the Carlton. But this was only one night and I wanted just a room for a few hours of sleep. In this case is Hotel Kyjev an ideal choice. It was quiet and the breakfast was delicious. And obviously the locations in the city center, easily reachable from anywhere. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Good: Hotel is situated in the downtown area and nearby the major tourist attractions. The hotel has enough personnel and they are capable and friendly. The breakfast is good. The price is reasonable.
Bad: The building needs renovation, water pipes leaked, taps dripped and one of two beds in our room was bad. They have in the same price category rooms with and without TV, I asked for a room with TV and was not successful (I do not know how many rooms they really have with TV). The elevators are slow. One side of the building was covered by a huge advertising fabric, on that side they may have rooms with no view through windows. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

The only negative was that mabe we should have requested a non-smoking room, but I don't think there was a choice given.

It's quite a big hotel. Therefore not very personal. The rooms are rather simple and old fashioned. It's a pity there is this huge commercial picture covering the walls of the hotel facing the old city centre so the beautiful view is severely destroyed. The elevators are extremely slow. Still I opted for this hotel because of the price and it's very central location. Just a few steps away you have the old city centre. Next door you have the big warehouse of Tesco where you can buy almost everything. The hotel's breakfast buffet is quite extensive. Unfortunately we had to check out very soon to catch the plane on time so we missed this breakfast. We asked the receptionist if it would be possible to prepare us some bread in the morning to take with us. This was no problem and each of us got a bag waiting for us with some bread, fillings and drinks. Final conclusion: Hotel Kyjev is a good option for those who do not require high standard and luxary rooms and equipment. It's rather cheap, centrally located and if you are not staying at your hotel room the whole day except for sleeping and a shower/bath than it's perfect. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

I have now stayed at the Hotel Kyjev three times and there is some variability in the rooms in terms of repair of the bathrooms. But overall the website did a good job of describing the hotel accurately.
The price makes the Kyjev a good choice. I attended a conference in Bratislava and many of people stayed at hotels in the old city. You may want to stress that this hotel is right next to the old city but much more affordable than the ones a few blocks away in the downtown. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

We only stayed one night in the hotel because we didn't like it. In the room there were to many carpets, which wasn't really clean and the bed stuff was old with feathers. We are both allergics and breathing was not so good in this room. The hotel has to be renovated, otherwise to my mind its not worth 3 stars. The braekfast was good. The window in our room couldn't close and in the stormy night it banged all the time open and close. As a cockroach bite my mother in the feet we decided to stay only one night and changed to another hotel. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

We were able to write our names on the dust in the cupboard. I liked the city and the hotel location. But somebody needs to spend some money and update the décor if they are looking for western travelers. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Cental location of the hotel and its safe parking place make it very advantageous. The room was small, but confortable, the bathroom should be modernised. The elevators are slow bt the personnel is so kind and helpful, that we easily forgot all these. The breakfast was surprisingly nice, we enjoyed the great variety of salads, and fruits. We will recommend this hotel to our friends, who go directly for sightseeing and spend only a few hours in the hotel room. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

It was excactly like I expected. Reading other travellers comments was really useful! Location of the hotel Kyjev was great!! We stayed in a low standard room and it was ok. Breakfast was good and we even got clean towels every day. So if one is looking for a cheap place to stay other than a dorm in a hostel I think this is a good choise despite of this soviet-kind-of-feeling. And if one is travelling with budget money, with the great breakfast you'll servive late til evening. From this hotel you can walk everywhere in 5 mins and a supermarket Tesco's is
just next to the hotel! (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

At the website the hotel had 2 stars, but it presumed to be a 3 star
hotel. Anyway I did not like it very much: the room had bad smell, the bathroom was quite dirty, the tub had yellow marks, the sheets had patches and there was almost no furnishment. In addition, we requested a room in a high floor facing the Danube, and they gave it to us... But they did not mention us that there was a huge advertising poster on the facade, so we were not able to see the outside from the room. The good facts were that the breakfast was really good and the location was suitable for us in order to visit the city center. I would recommend the hotel to people who want to have the feeling of an old fashioned hotel, making a step back in history, convenient to the city center, but without any kind of luxury. It is good for people who want to visit the city and just sleep at the hotel, but not for people who want to stay the day long in it. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

The hotel was as expected with the look of the hotel and the breakfast, however the room was well below what was expected. As said above, the breakfast was first class with its choice and quality. The room we stayed in was awful. The walls were paper thin, you could hear every word from next door. You could also hear every word above below and either side from within the bathroom. There is also a huge advertisement covering the whole of the rear of the hotel which gets illuminated at night. This thing covered our window which blocked out any view and at night lit up the whole room like daylight, and as there were no curtains or blinds, sleep was difficult. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

I really did not like that commercial curtain hanging over a whole side of the Hotel as you could not look out from the room, when you accept to stay at the hotel you should be informed so you you self could make your choice. Then the Hotel is a reminiscence from the old bad days, really not a good hotel, think of the lines in the lifts!!! But you can't get all for nothing so it is O.K when you think of the low prices, and what is the alternative if you want to stay central in Bratislava with a tight budget. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Hotel is excellent if you want to stay in the very centre and not have the hassle of public transport, as everything is walkable. The rooms are basic but clean and fine for the purposes of a short stay. Lifts were slow, and had the knack of squashing the 3rd person who tried to enter or leave the lift. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Kevin from UK wrote on 23.06.2005:
The hotel was 1970s heaven, I specifically wanted to experience the retro-vibe of the pre-independence era and it was as good from this point of view as others I have stayed in, in the former 'eastern-bloc' countries. The Apartment had fantastic views of the city including from one window, the Castle, the fantastic SNP bridge, the awesome Petrzalka zone, and even the Danube! The staff were superb, and despite my VERY limited language skills (yes/no/thank you etc!)they made sure all my needs were catered for, and we were made very welcome. The breakfast was good too! Security was unobtrusive but effective, good work the security guys! The lift was the slowest in the world! But this means you can have a chat with your lift companions! Stay at this Hotel! Unless of course you want the usual anonymous Euro hotel experience. These hotels (Kyjev etc) should make more of the 'old-style 70s-chic'. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

I would recommend the Hotel Kyjev firstly as a comfortable and cheap place to stay which is centrally located, as well as being a very interesting building with regard to the period it was built and the political system in place at the time. The check-in staff apologised that the lifts were too slow, but I thought this was part of the hotel's charm, and as I was on holiday, there was no hurry! Another bonus was that the staff were polite and helpful, and all spoke good English, which is useful as not many people from outside the country can speak Slovak. The breakfasts were excellent also. Please understand by the next comment that we mean it in a very positive sense. We really liked the 'retro' feeling of the hotel - the décor etc. I really think it could market the retro styling more - they have begun to do that a bit with the Luna bar, but not the rest of the hotel. It is very attractive for Londoners. However, I suspect that the bathrooms could do with a bit of updating - the taps dripped and the bath was a bit leaky - not problems, but needing a bit of attention. The staff were very helpful in reservations and at reception, but the breakfast staff cleared plates away too quickly, sometimes before we finished eating. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

It was better than expected. Namely, on the website one could read, and also from people in Bratislava one could hear quite disquieting news about the hotel. Finally it seemed to be quite safe. Although the furniture and the bathroom was oldish, it was clean, and the walls newly painted in the room. I liked the breakfast, and the staff was really friendly. A good price for those who do not need great luxury, but appreciate the central location. The great poster covering the whole facade of the hotel building looked probably nice from outside, however it blocked the beautiful panorama of the town one could see otherwise from the window of the room. To change the lifts for somewhat faster ones would be advisable. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

The hotel was very old and not looked after very well; the towels were at least 30 years old and so was the bathroom. Yet the beds were clean and good enough. We could recommend this hotel to people who do not want to pay too much for a short stay and who do not expect too much of the hotel room. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

The hotel is central, 15 minutes walk from the bus station (if you know the right direction to walk), a few minutes to the Dunaj, and just across the road from the old town of Bratislava with a good view of the castle. It is a curious building that lovers of old Europe would probably want to demolish as ugly and brutalist, but I liked it for its interior. For a 1970s building it has a lot of internal integrity and good period detail. This was the Soviet period so this hotel is already living history. Inside it looked like a real-life version of the cartoon film 'The Incredibles', except perhaps a little less pristine than a cartoon. It has a grand piano that is in tune. As a musician, this says a lot to me about the real quality of an hotel, despite other failings it may have. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

The hotel was exactly as described except you forgot to mention that the mattrasses haven't been changed since 1985 and are extremely uncomfortable. You also forgot to mention that the Hotel Kyjev has not been cleaned since 1985. It was the filthiest Hotel I have ever stayed in. Dust everywhere, especially under the beds. The stairs leading downstairs are full of dead plants and cigarette ends. A truly disgusting experience. No plug in the dirty bath and no way to have a shower standing up. The breakfast was Ok, very basic but adequate. Very bad coffee, weak. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

Breakfast was good, although I would not stay in such an overpriced room for the breakfast alone. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

The hotel would not suit anyone who wants a pristine western-standard hotel. On the other hand, if you are looking to experience the badly faded grandeur of the Soviet era with all that entails then the Kyjev is the only hotel in Bratislava for you. - Breakfast is great
Of course the hotel might not be the best choice for people looking for a luxurious accomodation, since its decor is very basic. (<< Back to Hotel Kyjev)

The retro Soviet style has a pervserse sort of charm. The Kyjev is priced in the "budget" segment of the market. It is not a great hotel, but it does represent very good "value for money", including the fact that it is in the downtown.
