Bratislava in October
Ambience
There is no escaping autumn in Bratislava in October with colourful leaves dancing in the wind. Many cafes still maintain their outdoor patios in the centre while the weather is nice.
Weather
The days, especially in the first half may still be warm, even t-shirt weather. But nights are definitely chillier and there is a fair chance of rain.
Events
Every odd year the Biennial of Illustrations (official site) takes place - a competition of magical children's books illustrations with a long traditions. A must see for children and art lovers.
The weekend of October 10-11, 2009 will be a busy one - the World Dog Show (official site) takes place (from October 8) with over 20,000 canine participants who will no doubt take run of the city. In addition, the football match Slovakia - Slovenia (FIFA World Cup Qualifier) takes place on October 10. On the same weekend there is a junior World Cup in Fencing, the Ferdinand de Martinengo Memorial at the Elan Sport Hall.
Bratislava Fashion Days take place October 15-22, 2009. On October 16 Agathi Ruiz de la Prada will show off her model in the P.O.Hviezdoslav Theatre flanked by a number of up and coming Slovak designers (our concierge can get you tickets).
Music
The annual Bratislava Jazz Days take place on October 23-25, 2009 (official site). Headliners include Steve Gad on Friday, Maria Joao on Saturday and Candy Dulfer on Sunday.
The International Gregorian Chant Festival takes place on October 22-25, 2009. On Sunday choirs will perform at churches throughout the city.
Exhibitions
The Brussels Dream, an exhibition about the Czechoslovak exhibit on the 1958 Expo in Brussels take place at the Slovak National Gallery in Nam. Ludovita Stura throughout the month (daily except Mondays 10-5:30).
Dining
The season for goose feasts starts in October (and it is, of course, the season for wine harvest and young wine). Many Bratislava restaurants offer goose dishes (roasted goose, lokse with goose liver) but the mecca of geese is the nearby village of Chorvatsky Grob.
